Alien Exterminator: The Reactor

Created for our exam project, Alien Exterminator. The reactor pumps glowing fluid throughout your spaceship to get rid of alien invaders.
I modeled the reactor in Blender and lit and textured it in Unity, where I also created the particle system that makes up the fluid.

You can play Alien Exterminator on itch.io.

The reactor consists of a main module and a console. Once the player enters the main room, the reactor is quite literally at the center of the gameplay. It leads the player (by way of empty glass tubes) to the two puzzles that must be solved before it can be activated, and its console contains the final puzzle that wins the game. It was important to us that the reactor be a focal point in the main room of the spaceship. Everything else in the room is either angular and boxy or gross and organic, so having smooth curves on the reactor and the glass tubes leading to it provided important contrast.

During playtests, we discovered that players had issues figuring out that the reactor contained a final puzzle, instead assuming that it was enough to activate the auxiliary pumps connected to the reactor. I addressed this by ramping up the intensity of the light and adding a spotlight to the window, literally pointing the player to the console for the final challenge.
